Yes, emissions testing is required in Washington, but only for parts of the following counties: Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane. If required, you will need to provide proof of passing a smog check to the DOL during vehicle registration and registration renewal.

Emissions Inspection for Smog in WA

Only tests at state-approved emissions test sites will be approved. No special documents are required when you arrive for the smog check other than a car with a legible vehicle identification number (VIN).  The $15 test fee is in addition to the state's regular car registration fee. You can pay by cash, local check, debit or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover).

If your car fails, your inspector will give you a Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR), detailing reasons for failing, and a list of state-authorized emission specialist repair shops. If you opt to take your car to your own mechanic, rather than an approved emissions specialist, you will disqualify yourself from a possible emissions waiver if your vehicle fails the retest.

If you have questions, call one of the following numbers:

  • King and Snohomish Counties: (800) 272-3780
  • Spokane County: (509) 329-3491
