If you discover your Washington license plate, or both license plates, missing, you'll need to respond fast in obtaining a replacement or replacements. By law it's illegal to drive without plates. If you attempt to drive you will be stopped and be in risk of getting ticketed, regardless of the reason behind your missing car tags.

Apply for WA License Plates With the DOL

Before applying, you first need to verify your address with the DOL. You can do this in person when applying, or you can do this online via the DOL's Vehicle Change of Address system.

After verifying your address, you'll need to:

  • Provide either a notarized Affidavit of Loss or a notarized letter addressed to the Department of Licensing explaining your missing license plate(s).
  • A completed License Plate Replacement Application.
  • Photo identification and proof of vehicle registration.
  • Payment for replacement license plates ($27.75 for two standard plates; $20 fee for retaining same license plate number; $4.25 replacement car tabs).
NOTE: Expect higher fees for special plates.

Though not mandatory, you should file a report with the police if you believe the plate or plates were stolen. This will protect you and your current car registration should the plates be used for illegal purposes.
