Personalized plates are available for most registered vehicles in Washington. But before applying you must first decide on at least one custom license plate number. When deciding, keep in mind the following license plate restrictions:

  • Plates are limited to a maximum of seven characters (six for motorcycle plates).
  • Characters are limited to numbers, letters, hyphens, and spaces.
  • The DOL will not issue a personalized plate number already in use.
  • The DOL will reject any license plate number it deems as lewd or offensive.

Apply for Washington Vanity Plates

Before applying, verify if your license plate number conforms with DOL restrictions. You can do this online via the DOL website.

Next, complete a Personalized License Plate Application form. Submit it in person, along with the custom plate payment for $49.75 (higher for special background plates), to:

King County Licensing Section
500 Fourth Ave., #401
Seattle, WA 98104

Or, send to:

Vehicle Licensing
Department of Licensing
P.O. Box 9909
Olympia, WA 98507-8500

NOTE: Fees for these license plates are in addition to regular car registration fees.

Specialty Plates

The DOL offers a long list of specialty plates ranging from military service to sports and hobbies and to service organizations. Fees and requirements vary. For more information, contact the DOL.
