Approximately 30 days before your vehicle registration is scheduled to expire, the WV DMV will mail you a renewal notice. The DMV does this as a courtesy only, and recommends keeping up with your own registration renewal in the event you don’t receive a reminder.

To renew your car registration:

  1. Complete the form that accompanies your registration renewal reminder. If you don’t receive the reminder, you can print the form from the WV DMV website: Form DMV-44.
  2. Find your personal property tax receipt. You’ll get this either by mail from or in person at your county assessor’s office.
  3. Write a check or money order for the applicable register car fee. Most owners will pay $30 again, but a two-year renewal costs $60 and a scenic license plate tacks on another $10.
  4. Mail everything to:
West Virginia DMV
P.O. Box 17110
Charleston, WV  25317

NOTE: You can complete the registration renewal in person at your local WV DMV Regional Office or at your county sheriff’s office.

The Annual Safety Inspection

So far, West Virginians still enjoy crisp, clean mountain air that’s fairly untouched by smog and emissions; therefore, the DMV doesn’t require emissions testing or a smog check for vehicle registration or registration renewal.

However, an annual safety inspection is required. You don’t have to show proof of passing the inspection in order to renew your registration (actually, you have to have your updated registration card before you can even have your vehicle inspected), but because most owners have their vehicles inspected within 10 days of the first time they register the cars, registration renewal time is also annual safety inspection time.
