West Virginia air is pretty clean right now (there’s not much smog or emissions floating around), so the DMV doesn’t require any kind of smog check or emissions testing to complete vehicle registration or registration renewal; however, it does require a safety inspection, and when your vehicle needs to undergo that inspection depends on your situation.

WV Safety Inspection Requirements

Safety inspections must take place within 10 days of first-time car registration or 10 days of establishing residency, and then every 12 months after that. (The inspection sticker you receive will include the expiration date, so don’t worry about marking your calendar.)

Inspections cost no more than $12 plus tax (this fee is in addition to your regular register car fees) and take place at various locations throughout the state; generally, they’re auto repair shops, but wherever you take it, make sure the facility is licensed by the West Virginia State Police.

In addition to the required fee, be sure to arrive with your vehicle registration card.

First-Time Car Registration and the Safety Inspection

Although every vehicle must be inspected at some point (and then annually after that point), not every vehicle must be inspected immediately.

For example, you can hold off on the inspection if:

  • You purchased the vehicle from a dealership.
  • You purchased the vehicle from a private seller or took over ownership due to a gift or inheritance situation and the vehicle already has a valid inspection sticker.
In either of those situations, you can wait until the sticker expires.

However, you must have your vehicle inspected within 10 days of registering it if:

  • You bought it from a private seller (or otherwise acquired ownership) and the inspection sticker is expired.
  • You’re from out of state. (If you’re from Utah, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Missouri or New York and have a valid sticker, though, you can wait until your sticker expires.)
