Vehicle registration is required for all vehicles in the District of Columbia. But, before applying with your local DMV office, you must first have your vehicle inspected for emissions (new vehicles with a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin and vehicle's manufactured prior to 1968 are exempt).

Pass the smog check and you can proceed with registering. Fail emissions testing and you must have your vehicle repaired and retested.

Register Car in Washington DC

To obtain a DC car registration certificate, visit your local DMV office with:

  • The car's original title. Photocopies are not accepted.
  • DC drivers license or DC non-driver ID card.
  • Bill of sale (new cars only).
  • A valid odometer statement.
  • Proof of car insurance.
  • Proof of passing smog inspection, if applicable.
  • Lien contract, if applicable.
  • Lease contract, if applicable.
  • Cash or a money order or credit card (Discover, Visa, MasterCard) to pay for one of the following car registration fees:
    • $72 for car 3,499 or fewer pounds.
    • $115 for vehicles between 3,500 - 4,999 pounds.
    • $155 for vehicles 5,000 or more pounds.
    • $36 for hybrid (first-time registration only).

Vehicle Registration After Relocating to DC

A Washington DC license or non-driver identification card is required for car registration. Within 30 days of establishing residency, you must apply with the DMV for a DC drivers license.
