The DMV will either mail or e-mail you a registration renewal notice approximately 60 days prior to the expiration date of your current car registration. You can then renew by mail or online. You're out of luck if you want to renew in person. The DMV recently eliminated this option.
If you were notified by e-mail, send a check with your tag number written on it to:

Renew District of Columbia Vehicle Registration Online
To renew online you will need:- A valid credit card (Visa, Discover, MasterCard).
- An e-mail address.
- Your car's tag number.
- The last four digits of your car's vehicle identification number (VIN).
