If you suddenly discover that your DC car registration certificate is missing, you'll need to apply for a replacement, and the sooner the better. District of Columbia law requires every driver to carry proof of vehicle registration when behind the wheel. Otherwise, you'll risk getting ticketed if you get pulled over and cannot provide proof of registration.

Register Car in Washington DC and Replace Lost Car Registration

The DMV gives you two replacement methods: in person and online.

In Person

To order in person, visit your local DMV office with:

  • Proper identification in the form of a DC drivers license, a DC learners permit, or a DC identification card.
  • Cash or a money order or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover) to pay the $7 vehicle registration replacement fee.

Online

You can order online if:

  • You have a valid credit card (Visa, Discover, MasterCard).
  • The DMV has your current name and address on file. If you recently moved or changed your name and failed to notify the DMV, you will need to order a replacement in person.
  • You have an e-mail address.
  • You know your vehicle's license plate number and the last four digits of your vehicle identification number (VIN).
Your replacement should arrive in the mail within 10 business days.

NOTE: If your lost registration expires within the next 10 days, you'll be asked to renew your registration rather than request a replacement.
