Whether you're the buyer or the seller, you'll need to pay strict attention to DMV title transfer requirements. One missed signature or date could delay the transfer process for days.

Transfer Title if You Sell Car in District of Columbia

Here's what to do:

  1. Sign over the car title to the buyer.
  2. Be sure to record the purchase price and the odometer reading in the designated areas on the back of the title.
No bill of sale is required, but you might want to complete one for your own records.

You'll also need to remove the license plates and surrender them to the DMV. The DMV will then hand you a receipt confirming registration termination. To avoid legal hassles, do not cancel your insurance before canceling the car registration.

Transfer Title if You Buy Car in District of Columbia

You'll need to provide the DMV with:

  • The properly assigned car title with odometer reading, purchase price, and all required signatures.
  • A completed Certificate of Title Application.
  • DC drivers license or DC identification card.
  • Cash, or a check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover) to pay the $26 car title fee and excise tax (based car's price and weight).
Again, no bill of sale is required, but having one for your own records is a good idea.

Expect your title to arrive in the mail within about 10 business days.

NOTE: Hybrid cars are exempt from excise tax in Washington DC.
