If you discover your Washington DC license plate or license plates missing, you'll need to immediately apply for replacement car tags. Otherwise, if you attempt to drive, you will be ticketed, regardless if you provide proof of valid car registration.

Apply for Missing District of Columbia Car Tags

Before applying with the DMV, you'll first need to file a Citizen Complaint Number (a police report) with the DC police. You can do this in person, or by dialing 311, local law enforcement's non-emergency number.

Once you've filed, visit your local DMV office with:

  • Your current DC vehicle registration.
  • Your DC drivers license or DC identification card.
  • The existing license plate, if applicable.
  • Proof of filing a Citizen Complaint Number.
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover) to pay $10 standard license plate replacement fee ($25 for organizational or personalized plates).
Standard plates will be issued immediately. Specialty plates, including vanity, will take longer to process.
