Car insurance in Colorado, like in most other states, is mandatory.

CO Liability Insurance Requirements

To comply with Colorado law, you must carry the following amounts of auto insurance coverage:

  • $25,000 of bodily injury or death to one person in any one accident.
  • $50,000 of bodily injury or death to two or more persons in any one accident.
  • $15,000 of property damage coverage.
These are the legal minimum amounts. You are free, and even encouraged, to carry higher amounts of insurance coverage to best protect your vehicle(s).

NOTE: Personal injury protection (PIP), or what is commonly referred to as no-fault insurance, is NOT required. Colorado legislature repealed this requirement on July 1, 2003.

You must always carry, while driving, proof of auto insurance. Evidence must include your insurance company name, policy number, date of expiration, and vehicle covered. Failure to provide proof carries steep consequences. At the very minimum, you'll be hit with a $500 fine and four points will be added to your driving record. Any subsequent violations will result in higher fines and the suspension of your drivers license.

Colorado authorities are vigilant in monitoring driver compliance. Insurance companies, by law, are required to submit weekly updates on new policies issued. This information is then compared with weekly vehicle registration reports tendered by the DMV.
