Liability insurance is mandatory for all vehicles registered in Delaware. Compliance requires carrying the following amounts of car insurance protection:

  • $15,000 for bodily injury or death per person in any accident.
  • $30,000 for bodily injury or death for more than one person in any one accident.
  • $10,000 to cover property damage in any one accident.
  • $15,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) covering bodily injury or death per person in any one accident.
These figures represent the minimum required amounts. You are welcome, and encouraged, to carry higher amounts of coverage if you deem necessary. You also have the option for additional protection in the forms of:

  • Collision coverage
  • Comprehensive coverage
  • Uninsured motorist coverage
  • Under-insured motorist coverage
  • Towing and labor coverage
  • Rental reimbursement coverage

Proof of DE Auto Insurance

When driving, you must always carry proof of car insurance. If you cannot provide evidence of insurance when stopped, you could, if convicted, face a $1,500 fine and $3,000 for any subsequent offenses occurring within three years of each other.

But being stopped is not the only way of being caught. The Delaware DE also conducts random audits for insurance compliance. If "audited," you'll need to provide the DMV with a completed Delaware Insurance Certification form, proving you have maintained uninterrupted car insurance coverage.
