Car insurance certification is required when applying for or renewing vehicle registration in South Carolina. To comply, you must, by law, carry the following amounts of liability insurance coverage:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury or death.
  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury or death.
  • $25,000 for property damage.
Bear in mind that these are minimum amounts only. You're welcome, and even encouraged, to maintain higher amounts of car insurance protection to best fit your vehicle situation. Along this thought, you can also take out additional coverage in one or all of the following forms:

Proof of SC Auto Insurance

There are no loopholes in the state's insurance laws. If you allow your car insurance to lapse, your provider, by law, must notify the DMV. You, in turn, will then be sent a Notice of Requirement from the DMV. You then must update the DMV with proof of a new provider, or, if not, surrender your license plates. Failure to respond to the notice will result in the suspension of your license and vehicle registration, which also comes with steep reinstatement fees, upwards in the range of $400.

If you're stopped and cannot provide insurance proof, you may, depending on the circumstance of the stop, be issued a citation and/or jailed. To avoid suspension, you'll then have 30 days, from the citation date, to submit proof of coverage to the DMV.
