Mandatory car insurance is required for the following situations:

  • You, the car owner, reside in Utah.
  • You, the car owner, do not reside in the state but have driven your vehicle in Utah for 90 days or more in one given year.
  • Your vehicle is registered in Utah.
To comply, you must carry the following amounts of liability insurance coverage:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death per person in any one accident.
  • $65,000 for bodily injury or death for two persons or more in any one accident.
  • $15,000 for property damage in any one accident.
NOTE: Bear in mind that these are minimum amounts. You, depending on your vehicle situation, are free to carry higher amounts of insurance protection.

In addition, you must also have at least $3,000 in personal injury protection (PIP), or what is often referred to as no-fault insurance. As the name implies, you will receive some form of compensation regardless if you were liable or not.

Provide Proof of UT Auto Insurance

The DMV shares a joint database with Utah insurance companies. You'll be sent a warning notice if the DMV discovers your registered vehicle is not covered. If you fail to provide the DMV with proof of insurance, you'll face a minimum fine of $400 (up to $1,000 for any subsequent offenses within three years of the first) and the suspension of your drivers license.

Be sure, when driving, to always carry proof of car insurance. Your insurance company should provide you with a wallet-size insurance identification card for easy-to-carry purposes. This will prevent possible legal hassles should you be stopped.
