Most District of Columbia passenger vehicles must pass an emissions inspection. Without proof of passing a smog check you cannot apply for a vehicle registration certificate.

Emissions Testing for Smog to Register Car in Washington DC

Inspections at the 1001 Half Street Inspection Station are generally on a first-come-first-serve basis, with preference given to senior citizens. You can, however, eliminate the possibility of waiting in line by making an appointment. This can only be made online via the DMV's online Inspection Appointment Scheduling System.

When you arrive at the DC smog inspection site have, for just-in-case-purposes, either your registration renewal notice or current registration certificate. If you don't have car registration or your current registration is expired, you'll need to apply for a temporary permit from the DMV. This will allow you to legally drive to the emissions inspection site. No payment is needed. The inspection fee ($10 or $35) will be added to your car registration fee.

If your car fails, a failed inspection sticker will be affixed to it. You will then have 20 days to have the vehicle repaired and re-inspected. To aid in the repair process you'll be given an inspection report detailing why the vehicle failed.

Emissions testing is required every other year. You will be alerted about two months prior if your vehicle is due for an inspection.

Exempt Cars from DC Smog Check

The following vehicles are exempt:

  • New model cars with proof of a Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO).
  • Cars built prior to 1968.
