The District of Columbia offers personalized plates (also known as vanity plates) for the following vehicle types:

  • Passenger cars: Maximum of seven characters.
  • Motorcycles: Maximum of five characters.
  • Disability Tags: Maximum of five characters.
Before ordering, you must first decide on at least one custom plate number (you're allowed three per application). Characters are limited to numbers, letters, and spaces. Punctuation marks and symbols are disallowed. The DMV will not issue any personalized plate number already in use, or one it deems as offensive.

After submitting, the DMV will either notify you by mail or e-mail if your application is accepted or rejected. It it's rejected, the DMV will immediately refund your payment.
