Will my current auto insurance policy cover driving in Canada?
Usually, a U.S. personal car insurance policy will cover travel to Canada. But, as with most things related to insurance, it’s hard to give a single answer to any question.
Companies have different policies regarding international insurance coverage. So, you should check with your insurer to get a specific answer regarding what your policy covers – and what it doesn’t. Just be sure to do this before you leave on your trip.
General Foreign Travel Rules for Auto Insurance
Most auto insurance policies cover travel to neighboring countries. So, if you live in America, that means driving in Mexico or Canada is usually permitted. But, driving in countries abroad, like England, New Zealand, or China, won’t be covered.
Need More Car Insurance Protection?
If your insurer informs you that your liability insurance policy isn’t valid in Canada, you can usually buy Canada insurance to protect you when you drive north of the border.
