Will my current auto insurance policy cover driving in another country?
That depends. As with most aspects of car insurance, it’s hard to give a single answer that applies to every insurance policy.
General Car Insurance Rules for Foreign Travel
Usually, though, a U.S. car insurance policy will cover road travel in neighboring countries – meaning Canada and Mexico – but, it typically won’t cover driving overseas, such as in Europe, Asia, Africa, or Australia.
Again, these are all generalizations. To find out what applies in your situation, you should take one of the following actions:
- Find your auto insurance policy and determine what it says about foreign travel.
- Call your insurance agent.
- Contact the customer service division of your insurance company.
Buying Additional Car Insurance
Even if your policy does cover driving abroad, keep in mind your liability insurance coverage limits may not meet the standards of other countries. In that case, you can purchase additional insurance to keep you legal while traveling in a foreign country. Or, you can possibly buy foreign travel insurance.
