In most states an SR 22 is valid for three years, but may, depending on the court's decision, stretch to five years. The length of your SR22 will be posted on your license suspension notice. If, for whatever reason, you decide to cancel your SR 22 insurance policy early, you'll put yourself at risk of facing another drivers license suspension.

NOTE: Keep in mind that SR 22 isn’t actually insurance, per se. It’s more the form you must file to and keep on record with the DMV to prove you meet the state’s liability insurance requirements.

SR 22 Insurance Following a Suspended License

Each state is different when it comes to mandating SR22 car insurance coverage, but generally it is required after being convicted of one of the following "high risk" traffic violations:

  • DUI or DWI.
  • Reckless driving.
  • Being labeled a habitual offender.
  • Being involved in an accident while not carrying proof of insurance.
  • Accumulating an inordinate amount of points on your driving record in a short amount of time.
You, in most instances, will also be required to carry SR 22 insurance following the reinstatement of your drivers license after it was suspended or revoked.

Your auto insurance provider will need to provide you with a letter of proof, confirming your SR22 policy.

For questions on your SR 22 mandate, contact either your local DMV or the presiding court.
