SR 22 requirements vary by state, but in most instances you will file your SR22 form with your local DMV. Your insurance company should file on your behalf, but don’t just assume it will; inquire with your auto insurance provider if the responsibility for filing falls on you. If you're responsible, your insurance company will provide with an SR22 form.

Take it to your local DMV office and pay, if applicable, any required fees. Depending on the circumstances behind your infraction, your driving privileges will then either be reinstated or maintained.

Carry SR22 Insurance and Avoid Suspended License

An SR22, or what some call high-risk insurance, is a guarantee that you will maintain proof of insurance for a specified period of time. Depending on the severity of your infraction (such as DUI, driving without insurance, reckless driving), this may be from three to five years, as determined by the court.

Be sure to take your time when shopping for an SR22 policy. Just like regular auto insurance, you'll find different quotes from different insurance providers. You can easily compare rates online.

After obtaining SR22 protection, you must carry continuous coverage. If you allow it to lapse, even for a day, you will face severe repercussions. In addition to having your drivers license suspended, you may, depending on your state, also face possible jail time and have your SR22 extended.
