All state DMV offices work closely with car insurance companies, sharing information on vehicle registrations, dropped insurance policies, driving violations, and auto accident reports. So unless you're involved in a minor car accident (backing into a tree or sign post, for example) involving no one else and you opt to pay for the repairs out of your own pocket, your insurance company will be made aware of all other driving mishaps and violations, which, in all probability, cause your insurance rates to jump.
- You add a vehicle to your current auto insurance policy.
- You apply insurance renewal.
- You initially apply for car insurance coverage.
- You change vehicles.
- You amend your current car insurance coverage to add or drop drivers, or increase or decrease protection amounts.
- You file an insurance claim.
