Each state has different requirements. So you’ll need to visit your state’s DMV Web site and look under the words “ license plate transfer.” Inevitably, this will be a sub-chapter under titling and registration.

Normally this is handled just like a regular registration. Depending on your state, you’ll probably be instructed to visit a DMV office in person with proper identification, plate number, bill of sale and cash, check or credit card to pay all required fees. Some states may waive the transfer fee for a specific type of license plate. In Alaska, for example, there is no transfer fee for Prisoner of War plates.

Most states will probably ask that you refrain from fitting your new vehicle with the transferred plates until you complete the registration process and receive the tabs (plate decals).
