First of all, you should always strive to obey the traffic laws and drive safely. However, if you received a red light ticket and don't think it was justified, you can try several defenses to fight the ticket.

For instance, did the picture blur your face? In some states, you must be clearly identified as the driver in order to be assessed a fine or given points on your license. If it's a murky picture, you can contest the infraction on those grounds.

However, some states penalize the owner of a vehicle, and not the driver. In those instances, the "blurry face" defense won't work. But, if the license plate number isn't clear, you can try to have the ticket dismissed because of that.

Also, check to see if the yellow light at the intersection in question works properly. The yellow signal must be on for an acceptable amount of time in order to give drivers an opportunity to stop before the light turns red. Find out the minimum allowable time limit for yellow lights in your area, and then measure the signal with a stopwatch. If the yellow light doesn't stay on long enough, you could have a case.

If the town requires photo enforcement warning signs, see if there were any posted. And, if so, if they were visible as directed by your town's regulations.

And, if your traffic ticket was mailed to the wrong address or had incomplete or incorrect information on it, you could try to get the ticket dismissed on those grounds.

These are just a few things to consider; there are other ways to fight a red light ticket. Keep in mind, though, that what causes a ticket to be excused in a neighboring town might not work in your town. And, even within the same town, you can experience different results depending on the judge.
