Nearly half of applicants for a permit test fail the first time. When taking the learners permit test for the first time, you should treat the exam as a practice test. You can always take the exam again if needed. Take the test to know what topics are actually on the exam and make note of the areas you need to review better.

If you fail your permit test, you can retake the exam at a later date. Check your state's policies on retesting. You can usually obtain this information on your states’ official Department of Motor Vehicle homepage or at your local DMV.  Most states require you do not retest on the same day, but some states don’t have a limit. For example, in New York you can take the written test again any number of times and you do not pay additional fees to take the test more than one time. The New York DMV does recommend that you study the driver’s manual and plan to take the test another day, however, if you fail the test on the first try.

Some states require a fee before drivers permit testing, as well as a fee for retesting. Georgia, for example, requires that you pay a $10 permit fee for each test attempt. In Utah, however, an application fee for a learner permit entitles the applicant to not more than three attempts to pass the knowledge test within one year. After three failures, you will be required to pay an additional fee.

The best way to prepare for the driver's permit test is by studying the driver’s manual issued by your state. Manuals can be picked up at your local DMV office or downloaded online. Most manuals contain short practice tests. You can also find third-party Web sites with practice tests that will really help you pass the test.

The day of your driving permit exam, it's normal to be anxious. Get plenty of rest the night before. Make sure you eat something before you take the exam; you don’t want your stomach growling while you're testing. Most exams are provided on a computer, but many testing locations have paper tests available to those who prefer this option. Don't be afraid to ask for a paper test if this will make you more comfortable.
