With the cost of fuel, more people are turning to motorcycles as their main means of transportation. Riding a motorcycle is a demanding and complex task which requires special skills and knowledge. Pennsylvania requires residents to earn a motorcycle license, otherwise known as Class M license, by passing a knowledge test and an on-cycle skill test. But first, you must obtain your Class M learners permit before you can learn to drive.

In order to get a permit, you have to fill out an application, take a vision screening, and pass a written motorcycle test that measures your knowledge of safe driving practices. The learners permit test covers information in the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Operator Manual. In the manual, there are PA DMV practice tests and an overview knowledge test. You can get a copy of the manual at your local DOT or download it on the DOT homepage.

Once you successfully pass the motorcycle permit test, you will be issued your Class M permit. The learners permit allows you to only operate between sunrise and sunset. You are to have no passengers unless the passenger has a valid motorcycle license.

After you've earned your permit, you can either schedule your skills test at your local DOT or schedule training through the Motorcycle Safety Program. The program is available throughout the state and free of charge to all Pennsylvania residents with a valid Class M license or permit. At the end of the course, a skills evaluation is given by a certified rider coach. If you pass the skills evaluation, you are not required to take the skills test and the licensing examination is waived.
