What should I look for in driving schools?
The most important thing to look for is whether or not the defensive driving school is state-approved. If you enroll in a traffic school that's not recognized by your state, all of your time and money will go for naught. Visit your state's DMV Web site for a full list of state-approved driving schools. Any school listed there will count towards any possible court or state mandate.
Even if enrolling in a traffic school is not required, you should always be open to the idea of registering for a class. Depending on your state and/or situation, a defensive driving school certificate can save you money. For example, say you receive a traffic ticket, or a high-speed speeding ticket to be exact, which puts you over the top of your state's alloted point total amount, causing an immediate suspension. Enrollment may reduce points from your record, allowing you to maintain your driving privileges. This spares you license reinstatement fees and a possible spike in your insurance premiums.
Some driving schools provide online courses, allowing you to study at your own convenience. Before enrolling, however, make sure it has your state's approval.
