Is drivers education the same thing as traffic school?

New Driver Checklist

Drivers education and traffic school are not the same. A drivers ed course is designed for new drivers, teaching the basics like three-point parking, reading traffic signals and driving at night. Whereas a defensive driving course is intended for someone who just got flagged for a speeding ticket, or any traffic ticket for that matter, and is looking to have the penalty reduced through enrollment. The focus of traffic schools is centered on becoming a more cautious or defensive driver.

If you're required by your state or a court to enroll in a defensive driving course, explore the possibility of taking it through an online traffic school. These online courses come with a major convenience factor, allowing you to study at your own pace on your own schedule. Before enrolling, however, make sure the course is approved by your state. Especially if enrollment removes points from your driving record or automatically dismisses a traffic ticket. Otherwise, you'll waste time and money.
