Most states do not offer a defensive driving traffic school through their DMVs, but they usually have pre-approved lists of private companies offering traffic schools. This means that if you take a course from a company on the pre-approved list, the state will accept its completion as a fulfillment for getting your traffic ticket dismissed or reduced.

Keep in mind that not every place will let you get out of a speeding ticket in this way. Some states require you to take a defensive driving course even if you still have to pay the full fine and get points on your license, as part of your punishment. But other places are favorably influenced by you completing a course and may reduce your punishment as a result.

Online traffic school is also available. These courses are less time-consuming than the bricks-and-mortars courses, inexpensive, and allow you to finish the course at your own pace. Most allow you multiple opportunities to pass their final exam; some even have a guarantee where you don't pay unless you pass. Some states allow online traffic school in lieu of regular traffic school; check with your state.
