How will points affect the status of my driver’s license?
Most states assign a point value to each type of a moving offense, such as speeding, failing to yield, or driving while impaired. The more serious the offense, the higher the point value. Once you’ve accumulated enough points on your driving record, your license will be suspended.
However, each state that follows this system assigns different point values for various offenses, and sets a different threshold for when a license becomes suspended. You should contact your state’s driving license division for specifics on this matter.
Keep in mind that many states allow you to remove points from your license – or give a credit that bumps the suspension limit higher – if you successfully complete a good driver course.
It’s a smart idea to periodically check your driving abstract to see if there are any errors on your driving record that could trigger a premature driver license suspension, or just to verify the number of points currently on your license.
