Are teens eligible to take a defensive driver course?

New Driver Checklist

Though not prevalent, you can find defensive driving schools open to teenagers. You can either search the Internet for a teen defensive driving course, or try contacting your DMV office for assistance. Some state police agencies will even sometimes offer free courses once or twice a year, usually held in a local parking lot on a designated course.

Keep in mind that these courses are not substitutes for driver education programs. Instead of focusing on teaching how to parallel park or how to interpret a flashing yellow light, these hands-on courses focus on enhancing a teen's defensive driving skills. This, depending on the course, might include learning how to catch and control skids, or how to properly swerve in an emergency-type situation. And in most instances, these are not beginner courses. Most require the teen driver to already hold a drivers license.

This is not to say, however, that you can't find a traffic school course for beginners. You may be able to find an online traffic school that offers instructional videos focused on teaching defensive driving skills.
