Your best bet is to either contact a traffic school directly or call your court regarding traffic school eligibility. Each defensive driving school and court may have different eligibility requirements, but in general you'll probably receive the following criteria:

  • You must have a valid driver's license.
  • Your citation must not be drug or alcohol related.
  • You cannot have any unpaid tickets or failures to appear on your driving record.
  • You must not have any citations within a certain period of time (usually 12 to 24 months) for which you attended traffic school.
  • No speeding ticket that exceeded the speed limit by over over 25 mph.
  • No violation that occurred with a commercial vehicle.

Some schools may dismiss a traffic ticket or even reduce speeding ticket penalties. But for this to occur, the course must be court approved. If time is a factor for you, look into the possibility of enrolling in an online traffic school. These programs allow you to complete the course from any computer and at your own pace.
