Recommended enrollment in a defensive driver course is usually in reaction to a traffic violation of some sort. A speeding ticket, for example, not only looks bad on your driving record, but also for the company you drive for. But if you have no recent citations to warrant a traffic school suggestion, more than likely your employer is looking to save money on company insurance costs. Some insurance carriers offer discounted rates for defensive driving school enrollment.

But then again there could be no financial motivation behind your boss's suggestion to get some defensive driving training. It could be purely out of professionalism. A refresher course on driver safety skills carries many benefits and is recommended for all drivers.

Regardless of the reason, your employer probably has a traffic school in mind, one that caters to CDL drivers. With any luck it will be an online traffic school, allowing you to complete the course from home at your own convenience. If classroom attendance is required, usually this will involve one session, generally lasting anywhere from six to eight hours.
