That depends on what you mean by a "certified defensive driving" class.

Most courts and state driver's license agencies have a list of approved defensive driving or traffic school courses that meet their minimum education requirements. But, just because a classroom or online traffic school says it's "certified" doesn't necessarily mean it's been approved by your court or driver's license agency.

So, to find out, ask your traffic court for a list of approved schools. If they can't provide you with one, go to your state's drivers license agency site. Often, you'll see the list included on its Web site.

If you're interested in taking a class from a school that's not on the list, be sure to seek the court's approval before enrolling in the class.

By completing a defensive driving class, you can sometimes reduce your traffic ticket fine or get rid of a speeding ticket. And, you may be able to lower your car insurance premiums.
