If you live in a state that approves traffic school attendance for the purpose of point reduction or to dismiss or reduce a traffic ticket, in most cases getting court approval is as easy as simply asking your judge or hearing officer. Although the court will undoubtedly look at your driving history, getting court approval for a defensive driving course usually isn’t a problem if you’re a first-time offender or if your driving record is fairly clean.

Keep in mind, though, that DMV traffic schools might not be options when more serious offenses are involved. For example, Texas won’t dismiss a speeding ticket for driving 95 mph or faster, and Arizona refuses to reduce points related to certain serious infractions.

Also remember to get a list of approved DMV traffic schools so you’ll know which ones you can enroll in to receive credit. Some states even approve Internet-based courses, so you might be able to take advantage of the convenience an online traffic school offers.
