What if I cannot afford drivers education?

New Driver Checklist
Depending on the school you could be facing a drivers ed tuition fee of anywhere from $300 to $600. There is no set cost. Each drivers education school charges its own rate. Some may offer a down payment plan, allowing you to pay in weekly or monthly increments, holding your Certificate of Completion until tuition is paid in full.

If cost is a factor, consider driver ed online. This is a wonderfully inexpensive alternative for helping you fulfill your drivers license requirements. On average most online classes charge between $30 and $40. All that's required is access to a computer – it doesn't even have to be your own. You then complete the course at your own pace. You can take three weeks or three months, the choice is yours. The only hitch is that as of now, online drivers ed is only offered in the following 15 states:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Indiana
  • Minnesota
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Virginia

Before enrolling in a drivers ed course, online or traditional, be certain it meets state approval. If not you'll be required to re-enroll in a recognized program, costing you additional time and money. Contact your DMV for a list of approved programs. Your high school may also have a list of approved courses.
