Can drivers of all ages take driver education?
Many people think that driver education classes are only offered to young people through high schools and local community colleges. However, this simply isn’t true. Even if you are not legally required to take driver education to obtain your drivers license, most states offer a driver education class for students of all ages. Many people, including adult first time drivers, may feel more comfortable learning from an experienced instructor rather than studying the driver handbook or relying on the help of a friend or family member.
Finding a drivers education class doesn't have to be a difficult process. Look up “driver education” in the phone book or go online and do a general search for your area. You should get at least one or two results, although some rural residents might need to conduct a slightly broader search. Call and ask about the cost of each class.
When you have decided which drivers ed class you would like to enroll in, ask if the class is available for you to sign up. Some driver education classes might require you to register a month or two in advance, depending upon how many students are allowed in each section. Sign up for the class when you can.
If you don’t need behind-the-wheel training yet, there are driver ed online classes that can help you get ready to pass the written DMV test. These classes cover much of the same material you'd find in your state's driver manual, but offer plenty of practice tests and other instructional resources to help you become a more knowledgeable driver. However, you will want to keep in mind that there is typically a fee for a driver ed online classes. The fee is often much less than what you pay for a traditional driver education program, but it is still something to consider if you're on a tight budget.
