No, at least not for your classroom or online drivers education class. For these types of drivers ed classes, you'll simply be learning the information you need to pass your drivers license written exam. But, you won't be getting behind the wheel during a classroom or driver ed class, especially when some states allow for driver ed online.

Now, once you start taking behind-the-wheel training, you may be required to have car insurance. However, even in this instance, you likely won't need insurance as the school usually carries its own insurance. In fact, you probably won't even be driving your own car. If you have any questions about the insurance matter, ask the driver's class provider for clarification, or contact your state's drivers license department.

If insurance is required, many teens can be placed on their parent's car insurance policy; and some insurance companies automatically cover children once they get their learner's permit. Call your auto insurance agent to be sure.
