What are the MA drivers ed requirements? Massachusetts

New Driver Checklist
All drivers under 18 seeking a Class D or Class M (motorcycle) license must meet the following MA drivers ed requirements:

  • Complete 30 hours of classroom instruction. This includes learning the rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, motor vehicle safety and vehicle ownership.
  • Complete 18 hours of road training. This must consist of 12 hours of behind-the-wheel driving and six hours of observing.

Both programs must be completed within a two-year timeframe that goes into effect after the first drivers ed session. In order to participate in the on-road portion of the class, you must be at least 16 years old and hold a drivers permit.

Be sure to enroll in a drivers education class the meets state approval. Only certificates from approved programs will be applied towards your drivers license requirements. Bear in mind that as of now Massachusetts does not acknowledge drivers ed online programs.
