How can I find a driver education program designed for CDL applicants?
It depends on where you live and, in some cases, where you’ll work.
First, contact your local DMV or other state driver licensing agency and ask about the drivers ed requirements to obtain a commercial drivers license. This is also a good time to ask about any state-approved drivers education schools and whether you can take commercial driver ed online.
You’ll find that some states – like Alabama, Massachusetts, and Ohio – typically don’t endorse any specific commercial driving schools and leave it up to each applicant to obtain training from a third-party or private school, and that other states – like Virginia and Vermont – require CDL applicants to complete training at state-approved schools.
If you find out your state has a list of schools it approves, your next step is easy: Just contact one of the schools and find out how to enroll.
No Approved Schools?
If your state doesn’t approve of any specific schools, however, you have some work cut out for you.
Finding a commercial driver education program won’t be too difficult (you can check your local listings as well as talk to other CDL holders about the schools they attended), but the leg work starts once it’s time to find one that meets Federal Highway Administration guidelines or any other requirements your state or employer might set. For example, some states and/or employers will only accept certificates from commercial drivers ed schools that offer courses approved by the Profession Truck Driver Institute.
Bottom Line: If you live in a state that doesn’t provide a list of specific schools it approves, make sure you talk with a representative from your local DMV or other state driver licensing agency, your (future) employer, and other CDL holders who know the ropes before you enroll in a program.
