DUI lawyers are paid for by the client and defend the client against DUI or DWI charges in a court. Public defenders are paid for by the public, not the client, and are provided by the court for criminal cases that go in front of a jury. This usually does not include DUI cases, unless the case is a felony charge.

If you have been charged with drunk driving, you should consider hiring a private DUI lawyer to represent you in court. True, this will cost some money, but depending on the severity of the charges and your individual case, it could save you much more money in the long run. A DUI can badly affect you for years down the road and in the short term, with big fines and drivers license suspension. A DUI lawyer knows all the DUI laws inside and out, and can help mitigate your punishment, or even help prove your innocence in cases where you were wrongly accused.
