The difference between a DUI and a DWI is a difference in language only. DUI stands for Driving Under the Influence; DWI stands for Driving While Intoxicated. Both terms are defined as having a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of 0.8 percent or higher, or 0.4 percent for commercial drivers.

DUI and DWI Laws for Drivers Younger than 21

There is a nationwide zero tolerance statute for drivers under the legal drinking age. In other words, drivers younger than 21, with a BAC of 0.2 percent or higher, can be convicted of a DUI or DWI.

Drunk Driving Penalties

The penalties for breaking DUI laws or DWI laws are different in every state; however, the following penalties can be accrued nationwide:

  • License suspension.
  • Loss of employment.
  • Loss of eligibility for future employment.
  • Increase in insurance rates.
  • Financial hardship.

Hiring a DUI or DWI Attorney

If you have been convicted of a DUI or DWI, consider hiring a DUI or DWI lawyer. A DUI attorney can often reduce the fine, and even the duration of license suspension. You can search the Internet or your local telephone book or Yellow Pages to find a DWI or DUI lawyer in your area.
