How should I prepare for DUI court?
That depends on if you're going to let an attorney handle your case, or if you plan to represent yourself.
Many experts advocate using a lawyer - preferably a highly experienced DUI lawyer - when dealing with DUI court. Why? Because the implications of a drunk driving offense can be severe and long-lasting. So, you want to ensure your rights are protected, and give yourself the best chance to either have your charges or penalties reduced. And, that typically requires a lawyer who specializes in DUI or DWI cases.
If you hire a lawyer, you won't need to do much in terms of preparation. Just read over whatever material your lawyer gives you, be somewhat familiar with DUI laws and penalties, dress professionally for your court appearance, and arrive in court early. Then, in court, let your attorney do the work. But, answer the judge's questions in a polite, respectful, direct manner.
If you're representing yourself, learn as much as possible about DUI laws and penalties, as well as your possible options. Read some applicable case studies, understand your rights, and educate yourself about courtroom procedures. It's not an easy task, and one that can be intimidating. Still, though, there are plenty of resources available to you either online or through your library.
