No. You can represent yourself. However, many experts feel it's wise when facing criminal charges (such as is usually the case with a DUI or DWI offense) to have legal counsel with you.

You can request the aid of a court-appointed lawyer or public defender. However, you must be at least facing the possibility of jail time if you're convicted. (In most cases, you will be.) And, you must prove to the court you're unable to pay for a private attorney.

Keep in mind, though, a court-appointed lawyer may do little more than ensuring your rights are protected. Such a lawyer may not necessarily actively fight for you in court to have your charges dropped or your punishment reduced. Additionally, if you're found guilty, you probably will still have to pay the public defender at least a small fee.

That's why a DUI lawyer may be your best option. These types of lawyers are skilled in dealing with drunk driving cases, know all the DUI laws and penalties, and can give you the best defense at your DUI sentencing.
