This DWI vs. DUI question is a common one, and it turns out there's usually little - if any - difference between the two.

DWI stands for "driving while intoxicated" while DUI means "driving under the influence." Most states consider both to be the same offense. In states they do draw a distinction, a DUI is typically considered the less severe offense, meaning a lower blood alcohol content (BAC) was involved.

In a few states, DUI charges are reserved for drug-related offenses, while DWI is for drunk driving cases. To complicate matters, some states choose different acronyms, such as OWI (operating a vehicle while intoxicated) or OUI (operating a vehicle under the influence).

Again, though, for the most part, DUI and DWI charges represent the same thing.

A qualified DUI lawyer can help you understand how your state handles this matter, as well explain the sometimes confusing DUI/DWI laws that may apply in your state.
