Am I required to obtain a CA permit before applying for a California drivers license? California

New Driver Checklist

If you have never ever held a drivers license in another state, then you must get a CA drivers permit even if you are older than age 18. If you are between the ages of 15 ½ and 17, then you must hold this learners permit for at least six months before attempting to pass the California behind-the-wheel driving test. Those younger than age 18 must also take drivers ed training.

Those older than age 18 may take the behind-the-wheel test whenever you feel ready, even if you only wait a few days; there's no time requirement if you're an adult. However, you must practice with another adult older than 18, who must be sitting next to you. Once you pass the behind-the-wheel test, you will be issued a drivers license. You do not need to take drivers ed courses, although these cannot hurt.

To get a permit, you have to fill out an application, pay a fee, prove your identity, and pass a written exam. The written exam is 46 questions. You must get 39 correct. It is therefore a wise idea to take at least one practice permit test before the big day. You can take these for free through the CA DMV Web site, or you can buy test prep kits to help you.

The test prep kits have at least 50 questions that are exactly like the real test. If you pass 50 practice questions, then you’ll probably pass all the real questions as well.
