What is required to take the CA permit test? California

New Driver Checklist

If you’re at least 15 ½ years old and have completed drivers education, you can go ahead and take the CA permit test provided you’re a legal resident of the state.  You’ll also need to have on hand:

  • Your birth certificate (original or certified copy).
  • $31 application fee.
  • Filled out application, signed by both of your parents, available at the DMV office.
  • Your Social Security Number.

Once you bring all these documents into the California DMV, you’ll take a vision test, offer up your fingerprints, and then will take the written permit test. Then you’ll be issued a learners permit.

Before you even make the DMV appointment, you should consider taking a practice permit test run with about 50 test questions. If you can get most of these correct, then chances are very great that you’ll pass the real DMV test.

Practice tests are available online at the CA DMV Web site. You can also purchase longer, equally realistic tests from various online drivers ed companies. These cost around $10 to $20.

After you get issued a drivers permit, you may practice driving with an adult licensed driver. However, make sure you (or your parents) have enough auto insurance to cover you. It’s a good time to take another look at the family auto insurance policy to ensure there’s adequate coverage, and maybe even shop around for a fresh quote.
