Am I required to obtain an TX permit before applying for a Texas drivers license? Texas

New Driver Checklist
The answer depends on your age.

If you're older than 18, you don't need a permit before applying for a Texas drivers license. If you're younger than that, you will need a drivers permit.

But, you must be at least 15 years old to apply for your learners permit, and have completed the classroom portion of your drivers education class. And, you'll need to know the information contained in the TX drivers manual, including laws, signs, emergency driving procedures, and defensive driving practices.

It's also a good idea to take a practice permit test or two before taking the test for your learners permit. This will reinforce the knowledge in your mind, and make it easier for you to remember the information on test day.
