Although the road testing portion of your drivers test varies a bit from state to state, you can generally expect to show your drivers license examiner the proper ways to:
  • Start and stop a vehicle
  • Change lanes
  • Make left and right turns
  • Maintain a proper distance
  • Adapt to various road speeds
  • Drive on different types of roads
You'll probably be required to take a maneuverability test to demonstrate you can negotiate narrow spaces with your car.

So, you'll need to practice all of this before you sign up for the driving test. But, that's partly what your drivers permit or learners permit is for - to allow you to develop and refine your permit driving skills under controlled conditions with adult supervision.

The written drivers test shows if you understand the rules of the road and if you can recognize common road signs. To gear up for the written test, read the driver handbook carefully and take a few practice permit tests online.

Put your required behind-the-wheel driver training to good use - and give yourself the best chance at passing your road exam on the first attempt.
