The availability of a DMV practice test depends on your state. Some states, such as New York, provide practice tests at the end of each chapter in the state's DMV manual. Other states, like California, for example, offer online tests on the DMV's Web site, giving you a choice of five tests with 10 questions each. And there are other states that provide no tests. These exams, if available, are free.

To learn if your state offers a practice permit test, visit your state's DMV Web site. Most provide search options allowing you to quickly learn if tests are available. If not, you can still find a large number of practice tests online. These driver permit exams are just like the actual tests in both style (multiple choice questions) and content. All questions are based on material found in state driver manuals. You can expect questions on everything from road sign identification to the use of high beams at night.

It's to your advantage to take as many practice tests as possible. The more you take the more confident you'll be when it comes time to test when it counts.
