There's a lot you need to know, as having a driver's license is a serious responsibility.

That's the bad news. The good news is that all the information you must know is contained in your state's DMV manual. And, there are plenty of practice tests available to help prepare you for the official knowledge test.

Although each state requires a slightly different knowledge base, you should have a good understanding of these topics:

  • Traffic laws
  • Correct driving procedures (turns, stopping, yielding, passing, etc.)
  • Speed limits
  • Parking
  • Safety belt use
  • Child restraints
  • Traffic signs
  • Special driving situations (night, fog, rain, snow, emergency, etc.)
  • Crash reporting

After you've studied the manual, take a few practice tests from some different sites to help you pass the written test. While doing so isn't required, you're much more likely to flunk the official written test if you haven't taken this additional preparation. And, who wants to have to make another trip to the DMV and try again to reapply for your drivers license?
